9 nights festival of Navratri begins
Wednesday, March 24, 2004
The 9 nights festival of Navratri begins on the first day of Ashwina of the bright fortnight. It is the nine days when we are supposed to thank the female principle of nature and the goddesses connected to them. It is usually celebrated during the evenings and nights because the farmers only were busy during the day. The nine nights are dedicated to the three main goddesses of Hinduism - Parvati, Lakshmi and Sarasvati. The first three nights are dedicated to the goddess of action and energy - Parvati. Lakshmi is worshipped for the next three days in her various aspects as the goddesses of peace, plenty and bliss. Saraswati, the goddess of the spiritual knowledge and the knowledge that frees us is worshipped during the final three days of the Navratri.

The ninth night of this specific Navratri is known as Ramnavmi. Ramnavmi is the birthday of Lord Ram. Lord Ram was born in order to establish righteousness, destroy evil, and protect his devotees. He was the husband of Sita, the master of Hanuman, and the lord of the three worlds.
