The Annual Aga Khan Walk at Centennial Park
Thursday, October 07, 2004
The Annual Aga Khan WalkThe Annual Aga Khan walk was held on September 26, 2004 at Centennial Park. For the first time this event was held simaltaneously in five cities across the US, which includes Chicago, LA, Houston, Dallas and Atlanta. The Partnership walk, as it is commonly known, is held annually by the AGA Khan foundation to raise money to "alleviate Global poverty." The theme for the walk this year was 'Quality Education for All.' All the proceeds from this walk goes to the people they are trying to benefit, none of the money is taken out to pay for the organizing the walk. Amazing isn't it! We have to congratulate this foundation since this year they raised $3.5 million dollars across the United States of America.

Everyone has heard the quote "Organization is the Key to Success." That holds very true in this case. The Walk was beautifully organized and wonderfully coordinated. The actually walk started at 12.00p.m and was about a mile long. People walked around the Park and were very enthusiastic that they are contributing their time and money to such a worth cause. The actual event had started at 10 a.m. There were volunteers all around the place whether it was being helping with Registration, serving refreshments or giving speeches informing people about the AGA Khan foundation.

After the walk, the Aga Khan foundation provided food and refreshment on one side. On the other side, the youth of the community put together an area called the "Village." This was basically to show how poverty stricken some of the third world countries are and how the proceeds from this walk will go and benefit these people. Sometimes you wish youth from all the communities are as involved as the ones from the Aga Khan community.

On the other side of this 'Village', they had an entertainment show. WOW! was that fun. One would expect Bharatnatyam to be done Hindus in India, here and Ismailee girl did a dance performance which was absolutely mind blowing. There were several dance performances from our very own Bollywood to keep everyone entertained. Now you would expect them to have Bollywood performances, would you expect them to have Latin or Greek dances? They had those too. Amazing isn't! At the end of the day, one felt satisfied that they had contributed their time and money for a good cause and had fun while doing it. When you left that place, you felt you had a fun filled day at the fair and now it is time to go home and sleep.
