Tuesday, November 13, 2007: (Mumbai):
Saawariya versus Om Shanti Om, which one is the winner that debate has been raging much before the movies hit theatres.
Well before the audience could give their opinion, Saawariya director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has alleged in an interview to NDTV that the bad press the film received manipulated audiences.
But trade analysts disagree with him saying the film has just fallen flat and Om Shanti Om might now hold the edge.
There was an open contest between Shah Rukh Khan's six-pack and Ranbir Kapoor's sliding towel.
But now after the first weekend's opening this war only seems to have become murkier. Daggers are now firmly drawn out between Farah Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
"Initially we had decided not to comment on each others' films but now I get the feeling that the press is being manipulated and there might be something more that meets the eye," said Bhansali.
Trade analysts say Saawariya was panned by film critics and Bhansali's accusations are not necessarily linked to the ground realities.
Even though Sony Pictures Entertainment, the distributors of Saawariya claim that the film with two newcomers made Rs 57 crore in India alone in its first weekend, occupancy figures across theatres in Mumbai say otherwise.
"Om Shanti Om is a clear winner, it has had a fantastic opening. In fact it has had the biggest opening of 2007.
In comparison to that Saawariya had a very lukewarm kind of opening.
"Over the weekend OSO had 98 per cent and Saawariya had 85 per cent but on the weekdays OSO has dropped to about 85 per cent and Saawariya has fallen to almost 50 per cent, .so the drop has been quite bad," said Arun Bhatia General Manager, INOX.
Movie critics clearly gave OSO their approval panning Saawariya.
But while all this does not paint a rosy picture for Saawariya it has still been only three days since the release of the films. The weeks ahead will show who is the real winner. Source: ndtvmovies.com |
