Nritya Natya Kala Bharati's Annual Dance Recital
Wednesday, June 02, 2004
Nritya KalaOn May 16 2003, Nritya Kala held their fourth annual dance recital at the Roswell Arts Center. Attended by 700 people it was a spectacle to behold. The show was split into two halves one was the Kathak part and second half was the theme half, which was based on a tree. One could easily tell that a lot of effort and planning was put into the show. But like any show this one has its shares of promising moments and drawbacks. Let us start with the shows promising moments. The Kathak part of the show was put together fabulously. The costumes and the make up were excellent. The live musicians, especially the table player were an excellent addition. Not only did the students learn how to dance they learned how to dance with live musicians. The age groups of the students were from 4 to 30. That is quite a feat to accomplish.

The second part of the show was the theme part. The theme was a tree in a village and what happens under the tree. I would definitely say it was an innovative theme. There were various dances based on this. There was a dance about an old man telling a story to little children. I must say that was a very cute dance. There was a Radha Krishna dance, which was choreographed beautifully. There was a dance on robbers hiding their gold under the tree and robber getting murdered in the process. There was a matka dance choreographed very gracefully. Finally the grand finale was very upbeat and lively. Students danced on Dholi Taro and finally the whole class came on stage. It was excellent.

The sets and the lightings must be mentioned. First nice tree was built for the theme. When the audience looked at it with the lighting it was quite spectacular. They had a “tree devta” giving a commentary between each dance. This reminded you of speaker in Ramayan or Mahabharat. It is intricately woven into the whole performance. Overall the theme was excellent.

Of course every show has its drawbacks. One of the major drawbacks was it was extremely long. It lasted about four hours. The audience was loosing their patience. Next this was there were too many acts that were not necessary. There were acts between the Kathak pieces and the tree theme that dragged the show. Between the tree theme we had branches who would come out periodically and dance. Now one or two would be ok, but there were way too many. This tired out people.

Overall the show was a wonderful attempt by the dance academy. Over the past few years the show has gotten bigger and better. In the next few years I will not be surprised if the show becomes as big as the Diwali or the Holi Show in Atlanta.
